Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that attaches peer-assisted study sessions to historically difficult courses.  The study sessions are facilitated by a trained SI peer leader who has previously received an A or B in the course.  For a quick summary, view this three minute SI video.

UC Clermont began its first SI pilot program in fall quarter 2008, with plans to expand the program after a year.  Check out our photo gallery to see how much our program has grown and how much our students are enjoying the benefits.

What students can expect

  • SI students earn higher subject grades and withdraw less often than non-SI participants.
  • SI sessions normally occur in classrooms near the subject classroom.
  • SI sessions are open to all students in the subject and are attended on a voluntary basis.
  • SI sessions include students of varying skills and are not divided by academic ability.
  • SI leaders attend all class sessions, take notes, and read all of the assigned materials with the students, after which they conduct two or more 50-minute SI sessions each week.  SI leaders DO NOT assist in the preparation of examinations or grade examinations.
  • SI leaders have weekly office hours to provide students with the opportunity to get additional assistance.

Brenda is a third year nursing major at the University Cincinnati Clermont College.  She enjoys helping others and is an excellent role model for students. She has been an SI leader since the program began in fall quarter 2008. This quarter Brenda is our SI leader for CHEM 104 with Professor Brown.

Megan is a second year student in the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. SI  has been instrumental in her own success as a college student and now she hopes to help other students as an SI leader. This quarter she is the SI leader for Chemistry 104 with Professor LaRue.

This quarter she is the SI leader for Math 132 with Professors Otteson and Vislocky.

Emily is an SI leader for Intermediate Algebra. She is in her second year at UC Clermont in the pre-business program. With hopes to receive her MBA, she plans to transfer to Clifton Campus. Her hobbies include golf, basketball, and camping.
